Shopping by the Stars

Have you ever signed up for a gift exchange and then found yourself in a quandary trying to decide what to buy for the person, whose name you drew? Maybe you've racked your brain, trying to think of an appropriate gift for a co-worker, or an in-law that you've met only briefly . . . or worst scenario, were you designated by your co-workers to select a gift for your boss while the staff pooled their resources to pay for it?

If you should ever find yourself in a situation, like one of those I've described, don't panic! I'm here to help you . . . No, I'm not going to try to sell you something, and I'm not going to send you to Rodeo Drive to Shop By the Stars! I am going to help you make a shopping list based on the Astrological Sun Sign of the person you're buying for, but first I'll explain a little about how Astrology defines our personalities.

Most of you know that the Zodiac, an imaginary belt that surrounds the earth, is divided into 12 Sun signs: Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces. These twelve signs are further divided into three groupings.

1. The first division is into two groups of six signs, sometimes referred to as masculine and feminine or positive and negative but the terms active and passive are much more accurate.

2. The second division is by the elements, Fire, Earth, Air and Water.

3. The third division is by modality, Cardinal, Fixed and Mutable.

To give you an idea of how these divisions affect the Zodiac let's examine the water signs Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. The water signs are passive and they are all emotional.

The Cardinal water sign, Cancer puts her emotions out there for the whole world to see, but being passive, everything that happens, happens to her, e.g. If her son comes home with a "D" on his report card she is likely to cry, "How could you do this to me?" Cancer is ruled by the Moon, who says, "I'll love you forever. No matter what you do. . . nothing can ever change that."

Most People think of Venus as the planet of love; Venus does rule relationships, but it's because Venus governs agreements and contracts. Venus says, "I'll love you, if you'll love me," but undying love, like a parent's love for a child, belongs to the moon.

The fixed water sign, Scorpio is secretive. His feelings, though very strong, are buried deep inside him. His rulers are Mars and Pluto. Don't cross him; he doesn't get mad, he gets even, and like the scorpion, he can really sting. Scorpio knows everyone's most vulnerable spot, and he'll wait for his enemy's most inopportune moment to strike.

The mutable water sign, Pisces is a dreamer, often spiritual. Ruled by Neptune, Pisces is easily swayed by the emotions of those around her. More than any other sign Pisces needs grounding, and she is the sign most likely to have an addictive personality.

Other factors in the chart either enhance or curb the tendencies indicated by the Sun sign, so to really learn what makes a person tick, the place of birth and the time of day are needed, but to determine his Sun sign, all you need to know is a person's birthday, so get your pencils and paper ready and lets make a shopping list.

We'll start with the Fire signs, Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. Anything red will do for a Fire sign; something that has been forged, especially and irons. Anything to do with fire, such as a barbecue, its tools and accessories or even a kiln are all great choices.

For the Aries man a subscription to Sports Illustrated or a book about new ventures.

For the Aries lady diamonds, of course, but also amethysts or garnets and lipstick, aloe vera, cactus or holly.

For any Aries, man or woman, a hat or sunglasses, a heat lamp, or a wood carving, a string of garlic or peppers, or a variety of mustards and hot sauces . . . and for Aries, you can never go wrong with cash.

For the Leo man, a nameplate for his desk, or a subscription to the Wall Street Journal. Any Leo would like tickets to Magic Mountain or the Circus, anything monogrammed, or something that glitters, such as gold - or a huge stuffed lion or a movie on tape or DVD. If a pool table is beyond your price range consider playing cards, poker chips or a roulette wheel.

For the Leo lady a Gucci bag, jeans with a designer label, a tiara, anything heart-shaped, a subscription to Vogue or a gift certificate for a spa or a manicure.

There are two types of Sagittarians. First is the Sagittarian who shoots his arrows at the stars. He would enjoy a book on religion, law, philosophy or science, or you might prepay his registration to a seminar on Nostradamus's predictions. The other Sagittarian would prefer a subscription to Sports Afield, a membership in the NRA, a crossbow, or an archery set.

For both types, man or woman, buy them: an oversized anything, or an airline ticket to anywhere; a figurine or picture of a horse or an elephant, a private box or a parking permit at the racetrack, a horse or a saddle. Take them to the Mardi Gras, and be sure their costumes have a crown. Buy them lottery tickets. The goodies they like are asparagus, berries, figs and olives, and both men and women like anything made of fur.

The Earth signs, Capricorn, Taurus and Virgo are practical. Establishing a savings account or presenting them with stocks or bonds would appeal to any earth sign, but each of them processes differently.

Capricorn likes something old — jewelry, an antique, or a first edition. A journey to the pyramids or catacombs would be an excellent gift, but if that is too expensive, how about a membership in the Smithsonian Institution, a book on ghost towns, or a subscription to National Geographic. If a classic car is out of your price range, Capricorn would like a cornucopia or a piece of pottery, and you'll make a friend for life if you present him with his family Coat of Arms.

Taurus wants comfort — anything sensual and anything green. She'd love emeralds, of course, but any plant, a set of gardening tools or a book about gardening would be enjoyed just as much. Satin or flannel sheets or a down pillow are good choices. If the budget allows, a vibrating recliner could be on your list, but a subscription to the Frugal Gourmet would please her, too. Any musical instrument, even a kazoo, would be treasured, and she would prize a small personal safe or even a piggy bank.

Virgo, being detail oriented — would want a bank that sorts the coins. Both men and women want something to catalog, and would like an encyclopedia for their computer; a jogging suit, ankle weights, an exercise bike or even a pedometer. A subscription to Prevention magazine or a book on astrology is appropriate, and any piece of exercise equipment will be put to use..

For the Virgo man — how to books, shelving for the garage, a tool box for his pickup truck or a luggage rack or a console organizer for his car.Although not a true collector, like Cancer, Virgo loves miniatures, because of the detail.

For the Virgo lady — a purse with lots of compartments, color coded hangars for her closet or a built-in shoe rack is recommended. Any gift that helps her to stay organized will be appreciated, but to really win her heart, get her a cat.

Any of the Water signs, Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces would love an aquarium and would enjoy a cruise or a fishing trip but the similarity ends there.

Cancer would enjoy anything for the home — from towels to tools. Pots and pans, a bread machine, cook books, glassware, serving dishes, appliances . . . Cancer has need of them all. To play it safe, buy something to add to Cancer's collection.

Give her an afghan you made, or cookies you baked, silver napkin rings or a blue tablecloth. Be sure your card is a Hallmark. Cancer will look, not like Leo, who believes he deserves the very best, but because she needs to know that you cared enough to send it.

For the Cancer man — a belt, suspenders, slippers, anything personal. A prepaid phone card or a cell phone that allows him to call you free of charge. DON'T send either Cancer a check or even a gift certificate. For them, it's truly the thought that counts.

Scorpio likes anything sharp — such as a set of knives or a very good scissors or a razor. A book on the occult, witchcraft or reincarnation, or a sex manual are all good choices.

Get him a subscription to Playboy or invite him on a 'Spelunking' adventure; he likes caverns. He would welcome a snake or an iguana.

Buy her a diary with a double lock, or a book about serial murder (true cases). She would love an invitation to a murder mystery dinner.

Pisces —the dreamer, would make use of an underwater camera and film or developing fluids and an instruction book. Both men and women would appreciate dancing lessons, or a gift certificate for a pedicure.

Pay his tuition to a photography class. A Piscean man often gets a carton of cigarettes or a bottle of booze in his stocking, though he may hint that he wants a bong.

The Pisces lady reads Harlequin romances — she would rather get 5 used ones than just one new one, because she reads them so quickly. She also likes any of Stephen King's or Koontz's eerie novels, and a book of poetry makes her very happy. Cut flowers and perfume are welcomed gifts, but most important, get her a card — one that expresses much sentiment.

The Air signs are fun to shop for because you have so many choices. They all like games, puzzles, toys and all kinds of books.

For Aquarius — anything electronic will do. Computer accessories, books or programs are perfect, as are a VCR, a telephone, ham or CB radio equipment. Grab an Aquarian's Ipod when he/she isn't looking and download a favorite concert into it. An exhilarating gift would be a ticket for a hot-air baloon ride, yet a kite would elicit a response just as enthusiastic.

For him — renew one of his science fiction magazine subscriptions or give him a ticket to a concert. Cell phones and GPS were invented for him, and probably by him.

Buy her a talking bird — a mynah or a parakeet. A canary is a good choice too, even a phony one, if it chirps. Gadgets are her favorite gift, if you have the time to search for one she doesn't already have.

For Libra, buy anything of beauty — a picture, clothing, any knickknacks, artwork, art supplies, or alabaster sculpture. You can't go wrong with any musical instrument, and of course — any representation of a scale.

For the Libra woman, the perennial sixties flower child — a wide-brimmed hat or a kaftan. She will wear anything filmy and flowing. It may be softly colored or vivid, frilly, lacy and delicate, or made of corduroy. Libra sees beuty in what others find discordant. Buy her lingerie, a wig, a cameo, or a pair of boudoir lamps with frilly shades. A subscription to Glamour would be appropriate.

For the Libra man — a neck chain or a bolo tie is suitable. In the 60's he wore love beads. Although the author died in the 1700s, the book, According to Hoyle, is a must own for Libra, and to go with it, he could use a card shuffler. You might give him a gift certificate for a wheel alignment or a tire rotation. He wants things in balance.

Last, but not least is Gemini, the easiest one in the Zodiac to shop for. Just look around his home or his office, to see what he already has, and then buy him another just like it!

Happy Holiday Shopping and I hope this helps
